The Steamship Historical Society of America
The Digital Ark is helping the Steamship Historical Society of America (SSHSA) to preserve and share its valuable collections via an online digital archive, called “Image Porthole”. It contains over 60,000 lost and forgotten steamship navigation images, including slides, glass plate negatives and lantern slides dating from the 1850s through the 1980s. As many of these images were unidentified and sat deteriorating, SSHSA’s goal is to have its members and the public use the online archive to help identify unknown details. We are continuing to add tens of thousands of more images as well as documents, ship ephemera, film/video and sound. Images are available for purchase in The Digital Ark Store. Profits from sales will be used to continue the archiving process.
