Newport Historical Society
The Digital Ark partnered with the Newport Historical Society (NHS) on the Newport Daily News Photo Archiving Project. We digitally preserved this collection of black & white prints as they were rapidly deteriorating over time. The online digital archive of images was made accessible to residents in order to gather vital feedback and document the diverse history of Newport County. The Digital Ark has continued to digitize black & white historic prints from other NHS collections documenting cultural events, picturesque locations and local businesses from the 1870s to the 1980s. We also produced a traveling exhibition of 25 of the most engaging and important images from these collections—each framed archival print will be sold at a silent auction in order to fund future digital archiving projects.
