Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

The Digital Ark (TDAC) is collaborating with the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Archives on the creation of a digital archive for the collection of personal correspondence written to Mrs. Gardner by more than 1000 individuals including artists, musicians and authors. This collection, which comprises more than 6000 pages of letters, postcards, telegrams and notes, has been meticulously transcribed and in some cases translated into English. The initial phase of this digital archiving project encompasses digitization and OCR (optical character recognition) of the transcripts so that Gardner Museum staff can conduct full-text searches of this correspondence for the first time. Many of these letters are currently on display in the Gardner Museum in cases arranged by Mrs. Gardner including letters from Henry James, John Singer Sargent, Henry Adams, and Julia Ward Howe. This collection is a highlight of the Museum Archives which is an important and valuable resource that documents the life of Isabella Stewart Gardner.
